s you add words such as “boot,” “pong” and “crunchy” into your daily lexicon you might also hear students refer to the “seven spots.” The seven spots have been highly debated, fought over, and only a brave few have successfully conquered all seven. Each spot is a unique location to add to your various sexcapades while on campus, if you choose.

The President’s Lawn: The President’s lawn is located on Webster Ave, just past most of the fraternities and sororities on the south side of the street. The lawn is hidden from view of the street by a wall and bushes, but the lawn itself is routinely patrolled by your neighborhood S&S. Avoid the lawn on big nights as S&S is bound to be very diligent in maintaining the sanctity of the President’s living space.

The Baker Stacks: A remarkably easy accomplishment, especially during interim, the end of finals, and the beginning of terms. The East Asian study room is a favorite—off the beaten path, quiet, and full of secluded corners. The basements are also secluded—but be careful, noise carries!

The Bema: While relatively unused these days, the Bema was once the location of graduation and other such longstanding traditions. It seems today as though the Bema is used for little more than sex and tapping by senior societies. Needless to say, you might try to tackle the Bema before the frost hits in—or else you might freeze some very important parts!

The Golf Course: While more used than the Bema, generally the same rules apply—try to get to the Golf Course before it becomes a tundra useful only for sledding.

The 50 Yard Line: The 50 Yard line is not well shaded, not well protected, but not really well patrolled. Be quick just to make sure that the football team doesn’t stumble upon some live entertainment.

The Green: Some argue that the Green is the most difficult of the spots to accomplish. It is decently lit, always patrolled, and there is close to no shade or protection from onlookers. However, if you wait until winter depending on the snow sculpture, you might be able to enjoy the comforts of Captain Hook’s bed or Calvin’s sled.

Dartmouth Hall Lawn: We believe that Dartmouth Hall Lawn is much harder than all the other locales—during the day it is heavily used by classes, some of which start at 7 am!, at night many clubs have meetings there, and late at night the entire building is illuminated by a spotlight. Dartmouth Hall Lawn is definitely only for the brave and daring.

	esponding to "Fracturing Tucker's Foundation"

Letter to the Editor,

The Tucker Foundation’s Mission Statement is to “Educate Dartmouth students to think and act as ethical leaders and responsible citizens in the global community through service, character development, and spiritual exploration.” Over the last two years, Tucker has been undergoing a strategic reorganization process to better align its structure and focus with the stated mission. As with many changes involving institutional reorganization, the Tucker strategic planning process has provoked debate and discussion within the Foundation and the broader community. This questioning and the ongoing discussions are critical to the vitality and ultimate improvement of the Tucker Foundation. To that end, the April 13th article in the DFP did an excellent job identifying many key concerns; however, as senior leaders who have spent four years intimately involved with the work of Tucker Foundation, we feel the need to respond to some of the article’s factual claims via this letter.

The Tucker Foundation initiated the strategic reorganization process in the fall of 2005, in order to align its programs and infrastructure with its mission statement. As a major step in this process, the Foundation turned to a consulting agency for an external review. According to the final report of that firm, “In late March 2006, the Foundation retained Keeling & Associates, LLC (K&A) to provide consultation and technical assistance in completing a renewed process of strategic planning and organizational assessment that its leadership had begun in fall 2005.” Keeling and Associates were hired to improve Tucker’s performance, not to “cut costs”, nor to legitimate a previously designed program.

As part of their review, Keeling & Associates made every effort to meet with all of the Tucker Foundation’s stakeholders. According to Richard Keeling, the author of the final report, he and his associates met with the Foundation’s leadership team, “a group of the administrative support staff, three program advisors, the civic interns, and students who participate in Tucker activities,” as well as “a group of Tucker's community partners.” Furthermore, Keeling indicates, “We also invited staff members to contact us after the visit, and several did so, on a confidential basis.” Keeling held discussions, to which all of the Foundation’s student leaders – including Dartmouth Community Service (DCS) chairs and the Foundation’s 20 civic interns $mdash; were invited.

In summary, K&A conducted “31 individual and group interviews of Tucker leaders and staff and Dartmouth faculty, administrators, and students, and, using consistent qualitative methods, analyzed approximately 450 pages of narrative data, including several SWOT analyses completed by the Foundation.”

The final draft of the Keeling report was submitted on August 24, 2006 and presented to the staff the next day. All staff were invited to submit responses to the report to either the Director of Finance, the College Chaplain, or the Dean. Furthermore, Dean Lord made himself available to meet privately with any staff member who had related questions or concerns.

One of the cornerstones of the Tucker Foundation’s mission statement is student leadership, and, therefore, the Foundation’s reorganization plan has focused on the empowerment of student leaders. To this end, the Dean’s Student Advisory Council (DSAC) – a group of nine seniors with significant previous Tucker leadership experience, appointed by the four different Tucker program areas $mdash; was convened to research ways “to modify or improve the structure of the Tucker Foundation in order to increase its level of student governance.” To fulfill its charge, the members of DSAC spent the fall term researching service-learning institutions at twenty other universities nation-wide, in order to identify the best models of student leadership. DSAC also sent out surveys to more than 500 Dartmouth student participants of recent Tucker activities, and invited these students to attend focus groups discussing student leadership at Tucker.

Ultimately, the Council submitted a twenty-two page report, with eighteen recommendations for improving student leadership, on March 15, 2007. Discussions regarding the implementation of these recommendations are still ongoing as we write this article.

As a result of the work by K&A and the Dean’s Advisory Council, as well as discussions and reports by the Tucker staff, the Foundation has begun to finalize a new organizational chart. The new chart represents a synthesis of the goals of increasing student leadership and improving organizational efficiency, while simultaneously ensuring the job security of all Tucker staff members. Positions and job descriptions were reorganized in the new chart, but importantly NO full-time staff members lost their jobs in this transition.

One of the most significant changes is the creation of student leadership positions. The chart does not replace any of the current student leadership at Tucker $mdash; this includes all of the DCS chairs as well as the current civic interns, but creates two new categories of student leaders. The plan calls for more than ten new student directors to help with advising and leadership of various Tucker programs (i.e. Student Director for Education or Student Director for Kids & Mentoring). These directors will not replace the full-time staff members, but they will work closely with the student program leaders and to give students greater ownership of these programs. This will entail significant responsibility, but the success of students in directing the Nicaragua program $mdash; which is the Tucker Foundation’s single largest program in terms of budget $mdash; over the last five years illustrates that students can be relied upon to fill this role.

The second new student leadership position at the Foundation will be that of the student governing board. While the specifics of this board are still being worked out, it will be modeled after governing boards at other schools, as well as COSO at Dartmouth. The board will likely have a role in the approval and evaluation process for new and ongoing student programs, giving students a voice in Tucker programming. Discussions between staff and students, regarding the composition and purview of the governing board, will continue on through the summer and fall in order to insure that the board empowers student leaders while advancing the mission of the Foundation.

The Tucker Foundation’s strategic plan is part of a process designed to improve the Foundation’s organization and programs in line with Tucker’s stated mission. As the above letter makes clear, the April 13 article’s claim that “Students, staff, and members of the community” have been “deprived of their right … to be a part of the discussion in forming the plan” is entirely unfounded given the numerous opportunities for students, staff, and community members to participate. Nevertheless, this is an ongoing process and we wholeheartedly support the article’s effort in initiating a dialogue with the goal of “continued improvement….of the Tucker Foundation.” The plan is designed to improve Tucker’s level of synergistic functioning and can only be achieved if people constructively engage in the process. Ultimately, we hope to create a Tucker Foundation that is more connected with the campus community, more responsive to the needs of its constituencies, and better able to live up to the lofty mission it has been given.

We would invite anyone who is interested to contact any of us directly if you have further questions, comments, or concerns regarding any of the issues raised in this letter, the original article, or about the Foundation more g
enerally.

Dj Wolff, ’07

Dean’s Student Advisory Council

Chairman, 2006-2007

Ashley Halpin & Rachel Bloch

Dean’s Student Advisory Council

DCS Representatives

nyone fortunate enough to have taken Professor Renza’s class on Bob Dylan knows this one already. The syllabus for the course was littered with gems, but Mike Marqusee’s analysis of Dylan’s relationship with the politics of the’60s sparkled the brightest. “Wicked Messenger” puts his evolving musical and lyrical aesthetic into the context both of social circumstances and his own evolving political sensibilities.

Conventional wisdom tells that after Bob Dylan rose to fame as an overtly political member of the Greenwich Village folk scene, he abruptly and aggressively rejected topical songwriting for a more personal focus around’64 or’65. However, Marqusee believes that the progression of Dylan’s career was not so black-and-white. Even when the days of “The Times They Are A-Changin’” and “Blowin’ in the Wind” were long gone, political and social themes continued to slither their way into his songs. In his late’60s works (primarily the albums “Bringin’ It All Back Home,” “Highway 61 Revisited,” and “Blonde on Blonde”), these issues were often disguised by poetry rather than directly confronted. Give another listen to “Subterranean Homesick Blues,” “Ballad of a Thin Man,” or “Stuck Inside of Mobile with the Memphis Blues Again.” Through his wild and metaphoric imagery, Dylan seems to be pondering the absurdity of modern America, and groping for a solution.

“Wicked Messenger” engages in historical and literary criticism so effortlessly that it never seems ponderous. Marqusee generously sprinkles anecdotes from Dylan’s life to make the references to the politics of the era more personal than polemical. Bob Dylan’s songs are more than just pop hits; they are incisive and sensitive insights into the world in which he wrote, and in which we continue to live. You will find no better introduction to Dylan’s politics than “Wicked Messenger.”

	rofessor Nancy Frankenberry

John Phillips Professor of Religion

Don’t take a class with Professor Frankenberry if you don’t want to think. Reading and reflecting intelligently are requirements in any class she teaches, but Professor Frankenberry more than repays your efforts with her own insightful comments and powerful thought. It must also be said that Professor Frankenberry handles a tough subject—the space between reason and religious belief—with extraordinary grace and care. Remianing sensitive to students’ beliefs but nevertheless demanding rigorous and self-critical thought of all beliefs and positions, Professor Frankenberry is a model of intellectual activity and the thinking life.

Professor Donald Pease

Professor of English, Avalon Foundation Chair of the Humanities

A phenomenal lecturer with a unique and wide vocabulary, Donald Pease has a masterful understanding of’th Century American Literature and 20th Century American Drama. Pease conducts his classes in a traditional lecture style, speaking for the entirety of the 65 minutes on his interpretation of the various novels and plays assigned for readings. Classes move quickly, and the readings for each class can be long and dense. But Pease is tremendously successful at unifying all the works of literature assigned and portraying the works within the histriographic framework of the time they were written. His classes are not to be missed.

Professor Mikhail Gronas

Assistant Professor of Russian

A highly regarded poet, author and researcher, Prof. Mikhail Gronas has credentials and accomplishments that demand major respect. Still, ask any Russian major or minor about Prof. Gronas, and they are far more likely to refer to him simply as Mischa, as if he were a friend instead of a figure of authority. The best thing about having a class with Mischa is his casual, impromptu and highly amusing way of conducting the classroom while bringing fountains of information to the conversation. Whether he’s chucking a ball around the room, drawing on the board, or breaking the class for a cigarette, Mischa’s familiar modes of teaching can even make learning the tenets of Russian grammar amusing.

And if that doesn’t work for you, how’s this? He’s a an imposing, bearded, heavily-accented Russian poet who chain smokes and chucks balls at your head to get you to learn the Cyrillic alphabet. What more do you want?

Professor Amy Allen

Associate Professor of Philosophy and Women’s and Gender Studies

Dartmouth philosophy professors as often as not seem to have written the book they teach, and yet Amy Allen still stands out as especially knowledgeable. She is a sharp, fast lecturer with a broad knowledge base: she is fluent in Nietzsche and everything else in continental philosophy, but has written a book in feminist theory and is working now on another on social criticism. Most impressive is her high priority for students; she is well prepared for her lectures and accessible and friendly in office hours. She is invested and professional in her classes and expects the same from her students, so expect fair grades and demanding material.

Professor J. Martin Favor

Chair of African & African American Studies, Assoc. Professor of English

Professor Favor mixes enthusiasm and sheer knowledge better than just about anyone on campus. His lectures are wide-ranging but always deeply revealing of the material at hand and are undeniably and reliably captivating. It is not out of question to compare his lectures to the jazz he loves to talk about; both are improvisational and earnest, and deeply rooted in an endlessly rich tradition.

Professor Clarence Hardy

Assistant Professor of Religion

Professor of Religion Clarence Hardy is certainly not one to be missed. His class on Religion and American society is one of the most interesting and thought provoking classes at Dartmouth. He is truly a gentleman and a scholar who knows how to keep the interest of a class while still entertaining all questions, and he often gives a creative option in addition to the standard paper form which enables students to put texts and authors in conversation with each other.

Professor Ellis Shookman

Associate Professor of German

Even if you do have to wake up at the crack of dawn (or before in the winter) to get to drill, taking a language class at Dartmouth, even just for the hell of it, can possibly be a rewarding experience. Taking a language class, or any other course, with Professor Shookman is inevitably an immensely rewarding experience. Professor Shookman is meticulous but patient, wicked smart but genial, and has a deceptively hilarious sense of humor. Professor Shookman also teaches many excellent literature courses, including one on the Faust tradition.

Professor Michael Chaney

Assistant Professor of English

The English Department’s newly acquired star Professor Michael Chaney teaches classes on topics ranging from early African-American literature to graphic novels. He leads class discussion with an enthusiasm and intellectualism both engaging and challenging, and his impressive oratory skills will make you wish Dartmouth still offered a public speaking program. Always available during office hours to chat with students about everything from their academic interests to Dartmouth’s social scene, Chaney embodies what a Dartmouth professor should be: brilliant, interesting, and interested

Professor Amy Lawrence

Professor of Film and Television Studies, Women’s and Gender Studies, and Comparative Literature

Professor Lawrence is the kind of professor that makes you leap out of bed when your alarm goes off. One could discuss, in great lengths, her merits in blunt list format $mdash; her overwhelming command of the course material; her attention to organization and structure in planning her courses; her excellent lectures; her ability to carefully stimulate and guide class discussions; her creativity in assignments and materials $mdash; but none of this wouldn’t matter quite so much if she weren’t such a bright, cheerful presence in the classroom. It’s a rare teacher whose abundance of enthusiasm and endlessly sunny disposition can alone make a class worth taking; it’s another story altogether when that personality also posesses the intellect of a top-notch academic.

This term, Professor Lawrence is hosting, along with Professor Steve Swayne, the Loew Film Series:The Classic American Film Musical every Thursday at 7:00 pm.

Professor Timothy Pulju

Lecturer in Linguistics

If you can find a more engaging lecturer at Dartmouth, please blitz us so we can take her class. Even in as large a class as Linguistics 1, Professor Pulju holds one’s attention so well, even the New York Times crossword looks dull and Facebook seem like a total waste of time. Seriously, though, Professor Pulju knows not only his subject (and a great many others besides) but how to teach. He conveys everything—tough ideas, simple concepts—with ease and flair.

Other Professors of Note:

Annabelle Winograd, Visiting Professor of Theater

Barbara Will, Associate Professor of English

Paul Christesen, Assistant Professor of Classics

Brenda Silver, Mary Brinsmead Wheelock Professor of English

Annabel Martín, Associate Professor of Spanish, Comp. Lit & WGST

Mary Coffey, Assistant Professor of Art History

John Kopper, Professor of Russian and Comparative Literature

Marlene Heck, Senior Lecturer in Art History

Lee Witters, Professor of Biology

	Like Steaks

[Responding to Manliness is Not a Virtue by Shin-En Wong from Issue 6.5.]

To the Editors,

Just what exactly is “white heterosexual masculinity”? You speak as though you could neatly construct these abstract categories in the air and pack everything neatly into them. How very interesting. But the world isn’t as simple as that. I dare say that every individual has her or his own idea of what constitutes manliness. Yes, we are not the kind of rational actors “white conservatives” love to think of themselves as, and yes, we are influenced by the society, but the ensemble of social relations reflected in each of our personalities has got to be a unique combination.

On the other hand, it is entirely probable that the common denominator across the entire American male population with respect to this question is much broader than you think. You are implicitly implying [Ed. Note: “implicitly implying?” Wow.] that Blacks and Asians necessarily have, altogether, different standards of masculinity, and I’m telling you that this assertion is simply unfounded. I don’t know how much “Asian” language you read, but if you read some of the classical Chinese or other East Asian chivalry novels you see exactly the kind of characters men like John Wayne play.

In the meantime, I’m Chinese (quit using catch-terms like “Asians”, please) and I like steaks.

Appreciating

the Woman Costume

[Responding to Empowering or Degrading? by Valerie M. Arvidson from Issue 6.6]

To the Editors,

I think this article clearly defines the modern-day woman’s uniform. My career involves face-to-face contact with customers and my employer at the time of my hiring informed me of the female uniform and there was no deviating from it. I had to look my very best all the time while interfacing to the customers. Over the years I’ve become very desensitized to my corporate uniform which requires a knee-length skirt or long dressy slacks and matching jacket, pantyhose and high-heels (pumps) with at least a 2 1/2 inch heel. I’ve gotten so used to pulling hose on five days a week and clomping around in heels all day that it became second nature to me. The job pays well so I put up with the dress-code but after reading this article I’m reminded of the thought I had when first interviewing for this job: I’m required to wear what!? After all, do I really have to wear a skirt, hose and heels to look good and perform well at my job? Couldn’t I wear flat shoes? But I understand that the female and male customers who come in will notice what I’m wearing, they will notice my hair, make-up, my nails and even my teeth and it does matter. I’m representing a company with my appearance and professionalism and part of that equation is the way I look. Since having this job, I’ve had my teeth professionally whitened and I wear acrylic nails to round out my appearance. People notice and I receive compliments all the time. But in the back of my mind I have to remind myself that part of the reason I do this is for me. I like to look pretty and I don’t think I would ever stop with this look.

A Weighty Conflict

[Responding to Coke Abusers by Anne P. Bellows from Issue 6.9]

To the Editors,

I just saw the video ‘The High Cost of Low Prices’ perpetuated by Mallwart…er, Wallmart [sic], and it simply demonstrates how multinational corporations are trying to rule the world.

What is it that causes this? Is it too much testosterone that drives humans to ruthlessness, outrageous behavior, self-serving mentality? Or is it that humans have been endowed with too much brain stem and not enough cerebellum to weigh self-serving against community concern?

The outcome of this conflict weighs heavily on the future of humanity.

Sir,

In regards to Danielle Strollo’s article, Title IX, I think it is important to point out that “wussy” is not a portmanteau of “woman” and “pussy,” but one of “wimp” and “pussy.” If Miss Strollo had any question as to the origins of this word she had access to a variety of sources ranging from Webster’s Dictionary to Fast Times at Ridgemont High.

Hopefully this is not indicative of a more pervasive problem regarding the researching of articles at the Dartmouth Free Press.

Sincerely,

Michael C. Russell ‘09

Mr. Russell,

In regards to your letter, I think it is important to point out that both Miss Strollo and I are women and do not appreciate being called “Sir.” If you had any question as to our sexes, you had access to sources ranging from the Free Press masthead to Facebook.com.

Hopefully this oversight is not indicative of your ability to read the Title IX article competently.

Reflections on Corpse Rock

Just a note from a Bible Belt (TN) burned-out heretic to say how Saved I got because of this both particularly auricular and peculiarly oracular articulation of auric-inspiring art.

(However it was perhaps a bit too dismissive of Slipknot; is everything that Pops up outside aesthetic cult figuring to be considered automachinistically anaesthetically occult disfiguring? I mean there’s The Death Model Betty Page–also from TN BTW. She was cult but now not. Does she look any different simply because she Pops up on a Suburban Comeoffee Table?) As a musically sentimental/senescent insensate geezer I would like to see more educational literary Aubades like this one, but between You Kids and my generation (OLD) which hates You Kids’ Youthiness because, being sixties post-traumatically angry in their cholesterolic disillusionment, they have to face up to not being Forever Young, I expect the spite of divisionally encoding silence to quell fork-repining quills. Whatever. But I still think notwithstanding the darth of rose color in smurchy death metal, it’s got a sort of churchy hearth. Ah Hah, this article as much as admits my theology is probably right–the Devil is actually first in line for salvation because, inter alia, he’s got such a good ear for tunes. Up there in classical Death Deism Land Mr. Chesley might call the Saving Grace of death metal Catharsis, but down here in the New Jerusalem we know what it really is: Revival. Death metal clearly has asocially redeeming devaluation. Anyway thanks and continue to cause mischief.

No Need to Riot

Thanks for publishing the cartoons (“The Cartoons”). It’s nice to see what all the fuss is about.

By now you’ve read about the reaction to a similar event at the U. of Ill. where folks don’t seem to be taking it so calmly. Perhaps someone should introduce football to the Midwest; football, I find, has a soothing effect on people who are capable of following it.

Cheers,

he cartoons below, originally published in a small Danish newspaper with right-wing ties, have swept through the Islamic world leaving riots and deaths in their wake. Any pictorial portrayal of Muhammad is controversial amongst Muslims, but the irreverent, provocative, and, to many, offensive nature of the Danish cartoons made them a particularly ripe target for ire and frustration. The Dartmouth Free Press in no way endorses the opinions expressed in these cartoons, but as they have developed into a controversy of international proportions, we believe that the Dartmouth community deserves to see them in order to better understand the emotions they have stirred.

To Nick Santos:

Just because you can’t find a job because you won’t “sell out” (a claim almost always proving to be in your own words “bullshit”) does not give you the right to level [...]

	n Defense of ROTC

To Nick Santos:

I was really offended by your recent article on ROTC in the DFP [“A Disrespectful Eulogy for ROTC”]. Just because you can’t find a job because you won’t “sell out” (a claim almost always proving to be in your own words “bullshit”) does not give you the right to level an attack against members of ROTC on an issue you clearly do not understand.

The reason Major Carver uses arguments that we cannot change the Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell Policy, is because we can’t. The military is a very different organization from civilian life. We answer to civilians, not the other way around. Therefore if America has a problem with the policy, they must do it through the channels established by law and the Constitution, which as officers we take a pledge to uphold. Our concern as cadets in ROTC is to prepare to lead soldiers in combat; I know that most people in this community are somehow unaware of that. As leaders of the GSA have admitted that no gay students on this campus wish to join ROTC, we are not actively discriminating against anyone. Therefore, I feel a stronger allegiance to the 40 men’s lives that will be entrusted in my care in combat than a bunch of rich, privileged students who feel upset by an organization they don’t want to join. (Although, in another fact you have wrong, anyone CAN participate in ROTC, they may not however be commissioned if they are openly gay.)

While Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell is a policy that is certainly on the wrong side of history, it is not something that ROTC cadets can change—we are totally insignificant in the military on any political issue, and it’s not our job. Something you could work on is adopting a tone that would help the cause. Rather than trying to be Bill O’Reilly on the left and make stupid, uninformed rants, you should do some research, talk to people involved in the issue and try to make a meaningful contribution to the discussion.

Jason Hartwig ’06

Some Modest Advice

About Last Issue

To the Editors:

I normally enjoy reading the DFP tremendously, but I was a disappointed and surprised that you had an article about “Blitz Etiquette.” I realized you have your arts and entertainment section, but I felt that this article was below your normal standards. It seemed more appropriate for the Mirror. I read your paper because I find it well-written and stimulating. Ms. Van Horn’s article was so trite.

Furthermore, I’m a little upset that you choose to advertise with the “double F’s” picture. That’s so juvenile—you guys are above that.

About the ROTC pieces, I also would’ve like to have heard from some members IN the ROTC about how they reacted to the full scholarship award. Didn’t Welton [Chang ’05] write for you guys? Show him some respect. I understand you don’t like the program, but don’t say the individual students are cowardly for not dissenting as loudly as you’d like. Hear their story first. I think that the military does promote a kind of heavy-handed subjugation, but I feel like many of these guys have more of a back-story than I think you give them credit for.

I’m only writing this because I really like your paper and think that you can do better :O). All and all, I enjoyed this edition.

Best,

Kristen Wong ’06

How To

Get Feminism Right

To the Editors:

I am disappointed that a purportedly progressive newspaper would perpetuate the scathing stereotype of feminism as anti-male. In “The Younger Man” in the January 27, 2006 issue of the DFP, a staff writer makes an assertion about feminist theory that is incorrect. Worse, this false assertion contributes to the already broad camp of people who dismiss feminism using misguided defenses of men.

Feminism encompasses as many theories and interpretations as any other lifestyle philosophy. Its core goals are to promote healthy self-development in women, which relies on a philosophy of interdependence. Women rely on themselves as much as other people in their self-development.

It is not an attack on men. It is a proactive theory in favor of women’s healthy self-development.

Please, hold off on the false descriptions of a field that already suffers from wide misrepresentation. I would like to expect more from a progressive paper.

Thanks,

Elizabeth Gibson ’06

Don’t Fear Change

at Church

To the Editors:

Authority and liturgy (public Church worship) sometimes become vexing issues within the Church. Reading your article on Aquinas House felt like a trip through some of the familiar territory of controversy and discussion we Catholics have visited in recent decades.

As an alumnus and a member of the (rather sourly portrayed) Dominican Order of which Dartmouth’s two new chaplains are members, I would like to make a couple of observations. First, the changes that were made in the liturgy at Aquinas House were all in accord with Church rules, including a rather recent statement from the Vatican that pleaded for more unity and conformity in the liturgy. Certainly different priests are more or less stringent about the rules but it is difficult to condemn one for obeying a directive he feels bound to observe.

Second, it is true that we Dominicans probably have a keener sense of privacy and cloister than our Franciscan predecessors at AQ. But religious orders are supposed to have varied charismas and ways of living. The way of St. Dominic—retreat in prayer that gives birth in ministry—has produced such men as Dominique Pire, a Nobel Peace Prize winner, Yves Congar, a leading ecumenist and theologian at the Second Vatican Council, and Thomas Aquinas himself, the greatest of all Catholic theologians, famed for his intellectual dialogue with Jewish, Moslem and pagan thinkers.

Change is difficult but it can be a learning experience for all when endured with love and faith.

Sincerely,

Fr. Francis Belanger, O.P. ’89
